Original Mixed Media & Abstract Art
My Process

Every painting starts differently. I usually begin by harmonizing the palette rather than simply using colors straight from the tube, creating a color relationship that can carry throughout the piece.
From there, the painting becomes a conversation between adding and subtracting. I build layer after layer using acrylic paint, pencil, chalk, oil pastel, spray paint, stencils, markers and different types of paper and found materials — sometimes including magazine pages or sheet music. I may cover something I've just created, scrape it back, draw over it, or allow an earlier layer to peek through.
I rarely know exactly what the finished painting will look like when I begin. I respond to what is happening on the canvas and let each layer influence the next. Sometimes I follow a set of rules; other times I deliberately break them.
That back-and-forth is what I love about abstract art. The finished painting isn't just the final image — it's the history of everything underneath it.
I typically work on professional gallery-wrapped canvases with a substantial 1.5-inch profile. I consider the canvas edge an intentional part of the artwork, often extending the movement, texture, and energy of the composition beyond the front surface.
Because of this, my paintings are designed to be enjoyed as they are and can be hung without a frame. Framing is entirely optional. When a framed presentation is desired, I’m especially drawn to simple floating frames that create a subtle separation between the artwork and the frame without competing with the painting itself.
